Raipur, April 9
Eleven people were killed while over a dozen others were injured when the bus in which they were travelling fell into a gorge in Durg district of Chhattisgarh late Tuesday evening.
The toll is likely to increase as the rescue operation was going on till the filing of this report. The victims were working with Kedia Distilleries located in Kumhari and were returning to their home when the mishap took place near Khapri.
The police officials said the driver of the ill-fated bus carrying around 40 employees lost control over the steering and it fell into a murrum mine. Soon after getting information, the rescue team of the state disaster relief force along with police reached the spot and started the operation. Since it was pitch dark, the rescue operation was affected. The authorities arranged additional lights and continued the operation.
After hard exercise, the vehicle was pulled out of the 50 feet deep gorge. The officials said 11 employees died on the spot itself. However, nine people had been injured in the mishap, of them, the condition of five was reported to be critical.
The injured have been referred to state capital Raipur, hardly 30 km from the spot, for better medical care.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief over the tragic incident and instructed the officers to provide best medical care to the injured.
