Srinagar, August 30

Former Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand was among 50 senior Congress leaders who resigned from the primary membership of the party today.

The decision came in support of Ghulam Nabi Azad, who severed his long association with the grand-old party four days ago. Interestingly, the Congress leaders submitted a joint resignation letter addressed to Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Chand and several others, including former ministers Abdul Majid Wani, Manohar Lal Sharma, Gharu Ram and former MLA Balwan Singh, announced their resignations from their party, including its primary membership, at a press conference.

“We have submitted a joint resignation letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi in support of Azad,” Balwan Singh said.

The 73-year-old former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Azad left Congress on Friday after lashing out at Rahul Gandhi for demolishing its entire consultative mechanism. Dozens of Congress leaders had also left with him.

Azad had hinted to float a national-level party from Jammu and Kashmir. More Congress leaders from Jammu and Kashmir are likely to quit the party and join Azad’s party once it come into being.
