NMDC to infuse Rs 125 crore in Bastar development this year

The iron-ore miner has spent Rs 1200 crore in last one decade for the cause

National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) will infuse Rs 125 crore in the development of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region during the financial year 2021-22.

The fund will be spent in six districts of Bastar division in accordance with the decision taken by the high-power committee constituted under the chairmanship of State’s Chief Secretary for the utilisation of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) fund. The six districts include Bastar, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur and Sukma.

Country’s largest iron ore producer will release the amount from its CSR head for executing the development works in the six districts approved by the state committee. The company has approved proposals worth Rs 959.16 crore that the Chhattisgarh government has recommended between 2010-11 and 2020-21. Of it, Rs 762.51 crore has already been spent while works to the tune of remaining Rs 196.64 crore are in progress.

NMDC has joined hands with the Bastar district administration to deal with a pandemic induced by COVID-19 in Bastar division. An amount of Rs 29.58 crore was released for medicine and other necessary equipment to deal with the disease.

Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NMDC Sumit Deb said that the company in collaboration with the Chhattisgarh Government was committed to the development of Bastar. Since its inception, the company has been working in the field of education, health, drinking water-supply, nutrition, capacity building and construction of infrastructure in the region. “The NMDC is working for an overall development of Bastar with seriousness and sincerity,” Deb said.

He said, “May it be the Bastar medical college, education city or major infrastructure project, NMDC has always given its support and is committed to continue with the support of state government and local administration.”

NMDC has been associated with a large number of social and welfare projects in Bastar that include Education City Dantewada, Education City Bijapur, Aakar Bhawan Sukma, Chu Lo Aasmaan, Lakshya Yojana, Girls Education Scheme, Aastha Gurukul, Children in Dantewada Education City and 1000 seat hostel for girl child, Saksham School for Disabled Children, Polytechnic College Dantewada, ITI Bhansi, ITI Nagarnar and Nursing education to the local girl child.

The company has expedited exemplary services in the field of health care. Besides involving renowned institutes like Apollo Hospital to ensure better medical care for the people, it incurred 80 per cent expenses for setting up a medical college and hospital at Jagdalpur. Its initiatives “hospital on wheels” and medical camp in interior areas have brought a big respite to the people.
