New Delhi, October 8

The Supreme Court on Friday recorded its dissatisfaction over the investigation done by the Uttar Pradesh Police in the Lakhmimpur Kheri violence, which claimed the lives of 8 people.

Four of them were farmers protesters who were allegedly mowed down by the vehicles in the convoy of Ashish Mishra, the son of Union Minister and BJP MP Ajay Kumar Mishra. The others were pulled out of vehicles and lynched by the protesters.

A bench led by the Chief Justice of India N V Ramana recorded in the order that the court was not satisfied with the actions of the state. The Supreme Court is hearing a suo motu case related to the Lakhimpur Kheri incident.

Senior Advocate Harish Salve, who appeared for the state of Uttar Pradesh, said the police had sent a summon to main accused Ashish Mishra. The bench asked, “Is it the same way we treat other accused too? By sending notices etc,”.

“This is the opinion of the Bench…this is a responsible State government and police. When there is a serious allegation of death or gun-shot injury, will other accused in this country be treated the same way?” it added.

Salve assured that satisfactory steps would be taken and investigation by the other agency would be explored. Taking note of this, the bench adjourned the matter to October 20.

However, the bench told Salve: “CBI was not a solution for reasons known to you…because of the persons…better some other person look into (the case).”
