Congress General Secretary and in-charge of party affairs in Uttar Pradesh unit Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday announced to give smartphones and electronic scooty to girls if the party came to power in the state.

In a tweet in Hindi on Thursday, she said, “I met some students, they said they need smartphones to study and for security. I am happy that with the consent of the manifesto committee, the UP Congress today took a decision to give smartphones to the girls who pass Intermediate and electronic scooty to Bachelor students.”

The announcement is seen as a big sop offered by the Congress to vow the women voters. Earlier, she had announced 40 percent tickets to women in Uttar Pradesh. Priyanka, on Tuesday, had announced that her party would give 40 percent tickets to women in the upcoming Assembly elections.

The Congress party has been desperate to make some gain in the lost ground of Uttar Pradesh where the party has been out of power since 1989. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has taken over the command in the state where political analysts see a direct contest between the BJP and the SP in the upcoming polls.

Interestingly, the Congress General Secretary had played the trump card of smartphones that her party had vehemently protested in Chhattisgarh. The erstwhile BJP government-led by Raman Singh had launched a scheme to distribute 5 million smartphones to the people.

Soon after coming to power in December 2018, the first task that the Congress government led by Bhupesh Baghel did was to stop the scheme.
