Despite adversities, state-run Coal India Limited (CIL) had logged 9.3 per cent growth in coal-off and 7.1 per cent in coal production during the month of August compared to the figure of previous year’s corresponding period.
Besides novel Covid-19, monsoonal downpour had come as stumbling blocks for the country’s largest coal producer. The company took up the challenge and matched upto the expectations in terms of coal output and off-take.
For the first time in the ongoing fiscal, CIL has clocked growth in both the facets. Overburden removal (OBR) registered a growth of 37 per cent during August 20, while composite OC production, which is the sum total of the OBR uncovered and coal produced through opencast mines, witnessed 30 per cent growth against the same month year ago.
CIL as whole supplied 44.34 MillionT onnes (MTs) of coal to different consuming sectors during the referred month against 40.57 MTs in August’19 registering a growth of 9.3 per cent.
While Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) clocked a robust 40.4 per cent growth followed by 10.4 per cent growth by Bharat Coking Coal Limited and South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL)’s 7.6 per cent.
Dispatch of coal and coal products to the power sector including special forward e-auction grew by 2 per cent. It was 34.20 MTs as against 33.47 MTs dispatched in August 19.
Supplies to the Non-Power Sector during August’20 witnessed a growth of 43 per cent at 10.14 MTs against previous year’s 7.10. Increase in absolute term for the month was 3.04 MTs.
Coal production at 37.17 MTs during August’20 was up by 2.47 MTs compared to 34.70 MTs recorded during the same period a year ago; registering a growth of 7.1 per cent. MCL recorded a remarkable 45.6 per cent coal output growth despite having received 41 per cent more rainfall in August’20 than a year ago month.
CIL’s OBR, which in the previous months has been growing sharply, surged ahead by 37 per cent growth in August’20 compared to August’19. CIL has excavated 81.94 Million Cubic Metres (M.CuM) during the referred month against 59.79 M.CuM in August ‘19.
All of the CIL’s subsidiaries recorded growth in excavating OBR with MCL clocking a whopping 115 per cent growth followed by NCL’s 52 per cent and WCL’s 40 per cent.
CIL logged 30 per cent growth in composite opencast production for August’20 compared to same month a year ago. The composite production was 103.73 Million Cubic Metres (M.CuM) for August’20 against 80M.CuM in August’19.
