The Maharashtra Police today wreaked havoc on a Maoist camp, killing 26 rebels that included a member of supreme central committee.
Acting on a specific tip off, the district police under the direction of Superintendent of Police Ankit Goyal drew a meticulously planned strategy and struck at Korchi in Mardintola forest area on Saturday morning. While the elite C-60 police commando team was conducting a search operation, it came in contact of rebels.
A fierce gunbattle followed in which 26 Maoists were killed. “We have recovered the bodies of 26 naxals so far from the forest,” Goyal said. The operation was led by additional SP Soumya Munde, he added.
The encounter took place on the pocket straddling between Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh states.
Four police personnel were also seriously injured in the action and were taken to Nagpur by a helicopter for treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable.
Unconfirmed reports said that a central committee member was among those killed in the encounter along with a senior divisional committee member. Police said the identification of the bodies were still on.
Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil appreciated the police action in Gadchiroli district and congratulated the team. “I am proud of our police,” he said.
Today’s action is a remarkable achievement not only in the history of the state but also in the history of the country. This action is very important for the security of the state. In this operation, 26 Naxalites were killed by the police, he said, adding that a large quantity of arms was also seized.
