Agartala, November 28

Ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept the civic body elections in Tripura inflicting a humiliating defeat to Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Mamata Banerjee’s TMC received a big blow as it was eyeing a major expansion in the state and expected a big gain in Tripura. The TMC was devastated bagging just one seat in the entire state. While Communist Party of India (Marxist) could win three seats, Congress failed to open an account.

In a massive victory for the saffron party, BJP has won 329 seats in the Tripura civic polls 2021. Altogether, counting took place in 334 seats, including 222 seats of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and 13 municipal bodies, 51 wards in AMC, 12 municipal councils and six Nagar panchayats.

According to reports, the BJP has won 329 seats, Left Front three while one seat each went to Tipra Motha Party and TMC. For the first time, there will be no opposition member in the Agartala civic body. For, BJP has won all 51 seats in the AMC.

The BJP Tripura tweeted, “Congratulations to all our elected B.J.P candidates and Karyakartas for their untiring supports and above all the people of Tripura thanks for reposing faith on BJP.”

Reacting to party’s impressive performance, BJP vice president Dilip Ghosh said that the results of Tripura Municipal polls expose the “hollowness” of TMC’s claims of having made inroads in the north-eastern state. He said that people there have faith in Bharatiya Janata Party.

“The civic poll results are on expected lines. The TMC did not have any chance to open its account in Tripura, they only made noises. This verdict shows hired people from West Bengal cannot help a party create a base in a state, which has faith in the BJP,” Ghosh said.

Tripura Assembly Speaker Ratan Chakraborty slammed the TMC following BJP’s emphatic win in the civic bodies’ elections. Speaking to the media in Agartala on Sunday, Ratan Chakraborty has said that the TMC has killed democracy in West Bengal and entered into the politics of Tripura with the motive to create chaos and confusion among the people of the state.
