Creating better resources for communities, the ground-breaking ceremony of two infrastructural projects were conducted by Tata Steel Foundation at Potka and Dumaria today.

As many as four classrooms will be constructed at Palli Mangal High School, Shantipur, Potka while a multipurpose community hall will be built at Kharida village of Dumaria block.

Sanjiv Sardar, MLA, Potka was present on the occasion as the chief guest along with other government officials. Mr Sourav Roy, Chief (Corporate Social Responsibility), Tata Steel was also present along with other members from the Foundation.

“We aim to create more opportunities for communities to use their own social structures and resources for addressing their own problems. Developing infrastructure is one such way to address community needs which focuses on participation and fosters empowerment, emancipation and brings in change through collective action. We are fortunate that those communities and administration have faith on us and believes in the initiatives that we take which is our biggest motivation in the process of co-creation of solutions,” said Sourav Roy, Chief (Corporate Social Responsibility), Tata Steel.

Palli Mangal High School, Shantipur is a premier school of Kowali area under Potka block of Jharkhand which presently imparts quality education to 427 students. With the additional classrooms and toilet block, the schools will be able to address the issue of space crunch.

Meanwhile, the multipurpose hall at Kharida will help people from 90 villages get a common place to gather and conduct meetings. Every month the Majhi Baba or the heads of the 90 villages conduct meetings to discuss on social and economic issues of the community. But due to lack of infrastructure, all these programmes were hosted in open-air setups. The situation turned difficult during extreme weather conditions. This will also help the communities to gather during festivals.

Tata Steel Foundation has been taking a number of infrastructural projects in its operational areas to provide support to communities including construction of community centres, boundary walls, additional infrastructure for educational institutions among others.
