Former Army Chief General Joginder Jaswant Singh, the first Sikh to lead the Indian Army, on Tuesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

However, politics is no new to the former army chief. He joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the presence of party president and then Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal in 2017. He unsuccessfully contested against Captain Amarinder Singh from Patiala Urban seat in 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election as SAD candidate. In 2018, he left SAD and joined Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali).

Singh contested and lost from Khadoor Sahib (Lok Sabha constituency). He had also served as the governor of Arunachal Pradesh.

General Singh, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC was born on 17 September 1945. He was the 21st Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army. He served as the COAS from 31 January 2005, to 30 September 2007.

The decorated Army officer has joined the BJP ahead of assembly elections in Punjab where 117 Assembly seats are scheduled to go for poll February 20 while the counting will take place on March 10.
