Rourkela, March 4
Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), an arm of state-run Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), celebrated the 51st National Safety Day on Friday that also marked the start of National Safety Week.
In 1972, the National Safety Day was first observed on the foundation day of the National Safety Council. On 4 March 1965, the Council was set up by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to bring into practise a routine on health, safety and environment. Last year, the National Safety Council marked the 50th observance of National Safety Day.
Atanu Bhowmick, Director In-Charge, RSP hoisted the Safety Flag in the ‘Shilpa Konark’ monument complex. A K Kundu, ED (Mines), S R Suryawanshi, ED (Works), A K Pradhan, ED (Projects), P K Satpathy, ED (P&A), C R Mohapatra, CGM Incharge (MM & Marketing), A K Behuria, CGM (F&A), and many other Chief General Managers, Heads of Departments, Departmental Safety Officers, other senior officers and a large number of employees of Works area attended the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhowmick said, “Safety is everybody’s business and must start from each and every person’s home.” He urged everyone to be safe and to motivate others to be safe as well. “Every person coming to RSP to work should return home safely,” he emphasised.
Safety pledge was administered on the occasion in Odia, Hindi and English by Aseem Kumar Behera, CGM (Safety & Fire Service), Naresh Kumar, CGM (Utilities & Environment), and Saibal Chakraborty, CGM (Maintenance).
Earlier, in the morning S R Suryawanshi hoisted the Safety Flag at ED(Works) office. Similarly in the Projects area A K Pradhan, ED (Projects) unfurled the safety flag. Safety pledge was taken on both the occasions and also in different departments. Safety badges were pinned on the senior executives and employees.
Safety quiz, elocution and song competitions will be held during the week for the employees. Competitions like quiz and elocution will also be organised for contractual workers to generate awareness.
