The elected civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to five years in prison in a corruption trial that was closed to the public.
Aung San Suu Kyi, who was arrested on February 1, 2021, when the military began staging a coup. She was charged with 17 criminal counts that her defenders maintain were fabricated. She was convicted earlier on five lesser charges and sentenced to six years in prison.
If found guilty on all the remaining counts, including nine more corruption charges, she faces as much as 163 years in prison.
The conviction was based largely on the testimony of the former chief minister of Yangon, Phyo Min Thein, who publicly confessed last year that he had delivered $600,000 in cash and about 25 pounds of gold to her in shopping bags., who said that he had given Suu Kyi US$600,000 in cash and 11.4kg of gold in exchange for favours for his businesses.
Phyo Min The was once regarded as the man who would take over leadership of the party after Suu Kyi.
Suu Kyi is being detained at an undisclosed location in Naypyitaw. The junta has gagged her lawyers in a bid to prevent updates about her case from reaching the public.
