Communist Party of India (Maoists) has put conditions for coming to the table for talks with the Chhattisgarh government.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has offered to confer with the banned outfit to find a solution to the problem inflicted by the Left-Wing Extremists (LWEs) in a part of Chhattisgarh. Baghel had said that the state government was ready to talk to the rebels if they expressed confidence in the Constitution of India and quit violence.

The CPI (Maoists) has responded to the offer with an overt signal that the rebels are in no disposition for discussion. Instead, they lashed out at the Chief Minister, stating that his approach has been insincere and twofaced. “The statement (of Chief Minister) hints at a major strike (against Maoists) in the offing,” CPI (Maoists) spokesperson said in a statement issued to the media.

Referring to the intense offensive launched by the security forces in the areas where the rebels have their say, the Maoists spokesperson said the Chief Minister should come clean why he had given consent for drone attack (on rebels)? Does it not indicate Bhupesh Baghel had joined hands with the Centre for launching strike from air? the spokesperson added.

Talking about the Constitution, the party said it was the governments that had been violating it. They referred to the panchayat acts, gram sabha powers and forest rights to substantiate the claim.

The CPI (Maoists) has put conditions for talks that include removal of camps set up by security forces in the interior areas, immediately stopping the air strike (drone attack), removing ban from its frontal organisations, allowing CPI (Maoists) to work freely and release their jailed leaders for talks.

While responding to the demands, Chhattisgarh’s Home Minister Tamradwaj Sahu put it tersely that talks would be held only unconditionally.
