Chhattisgarh government today said that 12 industrial accidents had taken place in the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), an arm of state-run Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).

State’s labour minister Dr Shiv Daharia informed in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly that 12 accidents had taken place in BSP from 2019 to June 2022 in which 12 labourers had died. Of the casualties, 9 were contract labourers while three were regular. Nine contract labourers were seriously injured in the incidents.

The minister said the investigation revealed that the labourers were deployed in the critical works without assessing the threat related to the job.

Daharia said there was no such provision under the labour act to provide job on compassionate head to the family member of the deceased. However, the state government has been taking the initiative on humanitarian ground.

The minister said the BSP management under its policy had been providing the job on compassionate ground. Of the nine contract labourers who died, family member of four were given job while the dependents of two deceased regular labourers were absorbed.
