South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) observed the Vishwakarma Jayanti, which is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Aadishilpi Vishwakarma Bhagwan, with pomp and fervor.

The event was celebrated by various departments at the headquarters of the SECL, a Bilaspur-based arm of state-run Coal India Limited (CIL).

Chairman cum Managing Director Dr Prem Sagar Mishra, Director Technical (Planning/Projects) S K Pal, Director (Finance) G Srinivasan, Shraddha Mahila Mandal President Smt. Poonam Mishra, Vice-President Smt. Rita Pal, Smt. R. Raji Srinivasan and other members General Manager (Personnel/Administration) A K Saxena, Heads of Departments, officers-employees, women employees reached various departments with their families and offered prayers to “Vishwakarmaji”.

A tableau was decorated with “Vishwakarma ji” idol in SECL Headquarters Civil Department, Transport Department, Excavation Department, Telephone Department, AC Plant, Electro-Mechanical Department, Indira Vihar and Vasant Vihar Municipal Administration Department, SECL Headquarters and Indira Vihar-Vasant Vihar Electrical Sub Station.

The festival is celebrated on the occasion of the birthday of “Aadishilpi Vishwakarma” on the ninth of Ashwin Krishna Paksha. The Day is observed as the birth anniversary of Lord Vishwakarma, who is considered as swayambhu, first architect and creator of the world. He constructed the holy city of Dwarka where Krishna ruled, the palace of Indraprastha for the Pandavas, and was the creator of many fabulous weapons for the gods.

He is also called the divine carpenter, is mentioned in the Rig Veda, and is credited with Sthapatya Veda, the science of mechanics and architecture. According to sacred Hindu tradition, Vishwakarma is known as the Divine Engineer of the world.

The festival is observed primarily in factories and industrial areas, often on the shop floor. As a mark of reverence, the day of worship is marked not only by the engineering and architectural community but by artisans, craftsmen, mechanics, smiths, welders, industrial workers, factory workers and others. They pray for a better future, safe working conditions and, above all, success in their respective fields. Workers also pray for the smooth functioning of various machines.
