SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant that produces high strength TMT Bars with earthquake and corrosion resistant properties for use in big projects of national importance has been supplying TMT Bars for use in Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, also known as ambitious bullet train project.

In the month of December 2022, SAIL-BSP has rolled out 4000 Tonnes of TMT bars in 9 metre length in 16 mm diameter from its modern Bar and Rod Mill out of which more than 3000 T have been supplied to meet specific length requirement of high-speed bullet train project.

The MAHSR project is mostly elevated. Work for the MAHSR project includes viaducts and bridges, maintenance depot, tunnels, earth structures and stations. Steel and concrete are the most important material used for any construction project of such dimensions.

More than 70,000 Tonnes of earthquake-resistant TMT Bars in 500D grade and different dimensions have already been supplied by SAIL-BSP for MAHSR project. The EQR 500D grade TMT bars supplied for the MAHSR project have been rolled by the Plant’s modern Bar and Rod Mill. It is worth mentioning that this is the third time BRM has rolled and supplied this grade of earthquake-resistant (EQR) TMT Bars in the required 9 metre length for the project. SAIL-BSP’s TMT Bars are being used in construction of piers and girders that will support the load-bearing capacity of the steel bridges as also for various other structures of the MAHSR project.

SAIL-Bhilai that has been supplying steel for dams, thermal, hydro-electric and nuclear power projects, bridges, expressways, flyovers, tunnels and high-rise buildings all over the country, has supplied. Some landmark projects where SAIL-BSP steel have been used for construction activity include Bandra Worli Sea Link Bridge, Statue of Unity, Agra expressway on which fighter planes have landed and in bridges and tunnels in North and North-East India.

High speed trains on MAHSR will operate at a speed of 320 km per hour covering a distance of 508 km and 12 stations. At least 475 km length of the project will be viaduct (River/Road/Rail) while about 26 km will be in eight tunnels. Other earth structures will be about 7 km long. There will be 12 stations and three depots in the project. The overall length of the project in Maharashtra is 156 km and 348 km in Gujarat.
