In a tragic accident, a woman was crushed to death while her six-month-old son died of injuries as she threw him to protect from an approaching vehicle in Chhattisgarh’s Gariyaband district on Saturday.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Sumant Sahu of Bhilai. She along with the other members of the Sahu community went to Ghatarani and Jatmai tourist spots on Saturday for a pleasure trip.

After having lunch, the women were resting while Sumant was feeding her infant. She spotted the bus bearing registration number CG 07 E 0814 that was reversing. In a bid to save her infant, Sumant tossed the baby before coming under the wheels of the vehicle. She died on the spot.

In the action, the baby sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the nearby primary health centre. However, the medical staff declared the baby dead on admission.

The mishap was reported to be the result of serious mismanagement in vehicle parking at both the tourist spots where people had been thronging due to winter vacation.

The Chura police have registered an offence and are investigating the matter. The bus driver fled the spot leaving the vehicle on the spot.
