SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant builds in-house project to boost heavy plate output

In house facilities built in SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant’s Plate Mill for enhancing production volumes of thicker plates to make the most of market opportunities was inaugurated by Director in charge, BSP Anirban Dasgupta on Saturday.

Plate Mill of SAIL- Bhilai is known worldwide for producing quality plates at par with international standards. The Mill currently produces plates in thickness sizes from 10 mm to 120 mm.

The Mill that produces a wide range of both garden variety and special steel plates has supplied special naval grade plates for aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and other warships of Indian Navy. The Mill has also rolled out plates in desired thickness for use in satellite launch vehicles of India’s Space Mission.

With rapid growth being witnessed in infrastructure sector involving construction of tall and heavy structures, demand for thicker plates i.e. thickness more than 40 mm has increased. Moreover, thicker grade of plates fetches better net sales realisation (NSR) per tonne. In order to make the most of opportunities, both in domestic and export market, Team Plate Mill has augmented its facility and developed an alternative route for enhancing production volumes of thicker plates.

At present, Plate Mill is producing upto 10,000 T of heavy plates per month. For enhancing the production, Plate Mill has under the guidance of Anirban Dasgupta, Director I/c BSP and Anjani Kumar, ED (Works) improved its facilities for production of heavy plates.

Plate Mill Team led by R K Bisare, CGM (Plate Mill), extended the charging side roll tables of Cooling Bed- 5 by 15 meters to handle Heavy Plates, exclusively. Further, fabrication of new boom was done for lifting of plates with magnet from extended roll table and transporting to trailers for further finishing at Shipping Bay. In the Shipping bay, a bed for gas cutting of plates, inspection bed with full UT facilities has been added for finishing of enhanced production volumes and despatch of heavy plates. This feat has been achieved under Shri Bisare’s leadership and with support of associated shops and departments in record time of 45 days.

Today on 14th Jan 23, Director I/c BSP Shri Dasgupta inaugurated and dedicated the facilities for operation.

Dasgupta also applauded the exemplary efforts of Mechanical Shops, Civil Engineering Deptt., EDD, Structural Shop and Machine Shops (MARS) in completing the challenging job with in house facilities and expertise in record time.
