All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Friday suspended Member of Parliament (MP) from Patiala Preneet Kaur from the party, interestingly, a year after serving notice to her.

Preneet Kaur is wife of former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who quit Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2021 after his bitter power tussle with then state party chief Navjot Singh Sidhu. The party issued a show cause notice to four-time MP from Patiala Preneet Kaur about a year ago.

After suspending her, the Congress party has also served a notice and asked to reply within three days as to why she should not be expelled from the party. Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said he had written to the disciplinary action committee of AICC regarding her anti-party activities.

The move of Congress party is aimed to send a stern message to other leaders who were not falling in line ahead of the 2024 parliamentary elections, senior party leaders said.

Preneet Kaur,  81, had served as a Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs from 2009 to 2014. She won the parliamentary elections of 1999, 2004 and 2009 but lost her seat in the elections of 2014and made a comeback by winning again in 2019.
