Jagdalpur, February 7

A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan from Kerala reportedly shot himself dead in Chhattisgarh’s restive Bijapur district on Tuesday morning.

The jawan has been identified as Binu M (37), son of Manikan M, a resident of Chittur in Palakkad district of Kerala. He was deployed with the 85th Battalion of the CRPF stationed in Chhattisgarh’s Maoist-infested Bijapur district.

Sources said he had returned from leave from his home town in Kerala three days ago. Before reporting to duty on Tuesday morning, Binu went inside the barrack and shot himself with the service rifle.

The sound of fire created sensation in the camp as the area is highly sensitive following Left insurgency. The other jawans in the camp rushed to the barrack and found Binu lying in a pool of blood.  The jawan died on the spot.

The CRPF officials have initiated an inquiry to ascertain the cause that led the jawan to take such an extreme step.
