Raipur, February 24
The All India Congress Committee (AICC) would amend a few clauses in its Constitution to set up units at the grass-root even as the party decided to skip holding elections to the highest decision making body.
The Congress Steering Committee on Friday unanimously decided to authorise party president Mallikarjun Kharge to nominate all members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), AICC General Secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh said. The meeting was held today morning even as the Congress’s 85th plenary session began in Raipur Friday.
Ramesh said the matter related to holding elections for constituting CWC was freely discussed and almost all the 45 members present at the meeting unanimously decided to authorise the Congress president to nominate members. A few members expressed their views both in favour and against the polls to CWC, he said.
Former Congress President, former Prime Minister will be the permanent members in the CWC that will have 50 per cent reservation for SC, ST, OBCs, women, minorities and youth.
The Steering Committee also approved a proposal to amend 16 provisions and 32 rules in the Congress constitution. The changes include the formation of party units at the village, mandal and ward levels.
Around 15,000 delegates are attending the session that comes in the wake of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, a massive cross-country foot march led by Rahul Gandhi that aimed to rally supporters and address the party’s disconnect with the voters.
The former Congress President, Sonia Gandhi along with senior leader Rahul Gandhi reached Raipur to attend the session.
Earlier, uncertainty prevailed over the arrival of Sonia and Rahul. In the morning, the Congress leaders had said that they were not coming on the first day of the session. However, Sonia and Rahul landed in the afternoon.
They were accorded a rousing welcome at the airport. Sources said Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would also be attending the session later.
