Kanker, February 25

In a cowardly act, a jawan of Indian Army was shot dead by the small action team of outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district on Saturday evening.

The jawan has been identified as Motiram Anchala, a resident of Bade Tevda under Amabeda police station in Kanker district. The regiment and unit of the jawan could not be known.

He had come on leave and visited the weekly market in Useli to see the famous cockfight. While he was enjoying the traditional event, a suspected Maoist fired at the unarmed jawan from point blank range.

Sources said the jawan died on the spot. The police party reached the spot and arranged to send the body to Antagarh government hospital for post mortem.

A chaos was created in the weekly market where people from interior areas come. Police sources quoting the eye witnesses said the small action team of the Maoists outfit could be involved in the incident as villagers spotted three persons targeting the army jawan. Of them, one took out a pistol and fired at Motiram, who received three bullets and collapsed on the spot.

The rebels later decamped from the market.

Earlier in the day, Maoists killed an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Police and two security personnel after ambushing a party in Sukma district on Saturday morning.
