Chhattisgarh: Bilaspur police’s “Nijat” nets 635 drug peddlers, bootleggers

The Bilaspur police have launched a massive crackdown against the drug peddlers and bootleggers under the “Nijat” campaign, nabbing 635 offenders over a period of one month.

Nijat campaign includes strict action against illegal drug dealers, intensive public awareness and rehabilitation of the addicts. The campaign, which has bagged many national and international awards, was the brainchild of Santosh Singh, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of 2011-batch, now posted as Superintendent of Police (SP) in Bilaspur.

Singh has implemented the campaign in the districts where he has been posted. Soon after taking the command in Bilaspur, Singh accelerated the drive in Bilaspur. Under the guidance of Inspector General of Police Bilaspur B N Meena and firm support from Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Rajendra Jaiswal, Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Rahul Dev Sharma and others, Singh could make the campaign visible within a short span of time in the city.

In the month of February that counts 28 days, Bilaspur police arrested 635 persons in Excise and NDPS Act, out of which 124 accused were sent to jail (72 in Excise and 52 in NDPS cases), according to officials.

Illegal drugs and liquor worth Rs 28.3 lakh were seized. Under 185 MV Act, 207 people were apprehended for drunk driving and the seized vehicles were presented in the Court, where a fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on each. Proceedings under the Excise Act (36F) were initiated against 338 people who drink alcohol in public places.

Under the awareness programme, meetings were held in 86 schools and colleges and 204 public places against illegal drugs.

Of the 635 persons arrested, 124 were sent to jail. Of it, 72 were related to the Excise Act and 54 related to NDPS. The Excise department seized 1053 litres of liquor from their possession.
