The security forces gunned down five hardcore Maoists in a fierce gun battle in Jharkhand’s Chatra district on Monday morning.
Of the killed, two rebels have been carrying a reward of Rs 25 lakh each on their head. Besides two AK-47, the security personnel recovered arms and ammunition from the spot during search operation.
According to police sources, a joint team of Jharkhand police and CRPF on Monday launched an operation in the border area of Chatra and Palamu districts. When the force reached Lavalong forests, rebels opened fire. The security forces took the position and retaliated.
The firing started at around 9.30 am and lasted for over an hour before rebels fled into the forests. During search operation launched by after the encounter, security personnel discovered five bodies. Besides Maoist commander Gautam Paswan, sub zonal commander Amar was among those killed in the gunbattle.
Police officials said the casualty on the part of Maoists could be more as they might have carried away a few bodies.
