Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and the tribal face of the party in Chhattisgarh, Nandkumar Sai on Monday joined the Congress.

Sai, the first leader of opposition in the reorganized state of Chhattisgarh, quit the BJP on Sunday. He had been the member of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha from Chhattisgarh and was also appointed as the Chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Tribes. His association with the BJP continued for over four decades.

In his resignation letter addressed to the state BJP President, Sai said he was facing humiliated in the party. On Monday, he formally joined the Congress party in presence of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and state Congress President Mohan Markam.

Baghel said it was a matter of pride that on the occasion of Labour Day, the leader who struggled for the cause of tribals and poor people joined the Congress party.

The development is seen as a big political move as senior tribal leader quit BJP when the party has been gearing up for state polls due in November.
