India woke up on Saturday with shock as 233 bodies were recovered from the mangled remains of the three trains that collided in Odisha’s Balasore on Friday evening to add another deadliest accident on tracks in the history.
At around 7 pm on Friday, 10-12 coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express (12841) derailed near Baleswar after colliding with rakes of a goods train and fell on the opposite track. “After some time, another train from Yeswanthpur to Howrah (12864) dashed into those derailed coaches resulting in the derailment of its 3-4 coaches,” the railway spokesperson said.
Though the rescue operation continued through out the night, the dawn flashed the devastation of the accident. The mangled coaches of the three trains narrated the story of destruction. As the bodies were pulled out from the remains, the toll reached 233 and the count continued. Over 900 are injured; a major among them critically wounded.
The train accident in Odisha enabled to turn the pages of the deadliest train mishaps happened in India. It first five includes:
1. Bihar Train Disaster in June 1981. Considered to be the deadliest mishap, 500 to 800 people died on June 6, 1981 after a passenger train fell into Baghmati river near Saharsa Bihar.
2. Firozabad train mishap in August 1995: At least 358 people were killed after Purushottam Express rammed into Kalindi Express near Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred on August 20, 1995.
3. Awadh-Assam Express mishap in August 1999: At least 268 people were killed and around 359 injured after Awadh-Assam Express collided with Brahmaputra Mail at Gaisal on August 2, 1999. The incident occurred while Awadh Assam Express en route to Guwahati was stationary at a station named Gaisal. The Brahmaputra Mail carrying Indian soldiers and servicemen from Assam was on its way to the border.
4. Khanna Rail Disaster in November 1998: Jammu Tawi-Sealdah Express rammed into three derailed bogies of Amritsar-bound Frontier Golden Temple Mail at Khanna on November 26, 1998 killing at least 212 people were killed in the tragic train mishap.
5. Gyaneshwari Express train in May 2010: Ina suspectedterror attack on tracks, Maoists blew up rails between Khemashuli and Sardiha in West Midnapore district on May 28, 2010 that resulted in the derailment of Mumbai-bound Howrah Kurla Lokmanya Tilak Gyaneshwari Super Deluxe Express. At least 170 people onboard the train were killed.
