Anusuiya Uikey to head peace panel in Manipur

Government of India had constituted a Peace Committee in Manipur under the Chairpersonship of Governor, Manipur Anusuiya Uikey.

The mandate of the Committee will be to facilitate peace making process among various ethnic groups of the State, including peaceful dialogue and negotiations between conflicting parties and groups. The Committee should strengthen social cohesiveness, mutual understanding and facilitate cordial communication between various ethnic groups.

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah had visited the state of Manipur during 29th May 2023 to 1st June 2023 and had announced the constitution of the Peace Committee after taking stock of the situation.

The members of the committee include the Chief Minister, a few Ministers in the State Government, MP, MLAs and leaders from different political parties. The Committee also includes former civil servants, educationists, litterateurs, artists, social workers and representatives of different ethnic groups.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma landed in the Manipur capital on Saturday morning and called on his Manipur counterpart N Biren Singh to discuss the backdrop of the ongoing violence in Manipur.

According to sources, Sarma was carrying a message from Delhi as all sides work to find a solution to the ethnic violence in the state that has claimed over 100 lives since May 3. The Assam Chief Minister had assured that he would work at his level best to restore peace in Manipur.

Sarma is likely to brief the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the situation.
