Chhattisgarh Chief Minister kicks off Chhattisgarhiya Olympics

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Monday inaugurated the Chhattisgarhiya Olympics 2023, an annual event organised in the state to promote traditional sports.

The event spanning six phases coincides with the ‘Hareli Tihar’, a prominent festival of the state.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel reached Nawagaon Gauthan participated in the event. He waved the green flag to start the ‘Gedi’ race. One of the famous sports in Chhattisgarh, Gedi is a bamboo pole on which boys walk, play football and race. It also symbolises that even if one stands above the ground level, he or she needs the support of the ground.

The Chief Minister also distributed sports equipment to the participating players.

Chhattisgarhiya Olympics, now in its second year, has gained immense popularity. To cater to the growing interest, traditional sports including rope jumping and wrestling are now a part of this event for the first time.

The event will feature competitions of 16 traditional sports in 6 phases, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their skills and compete at various levels. Over 30 lakh female and male participants will take part in the Chhattisgarhiya Olympics in three different age groups.
