Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had tried to defame Chhattisgarh by comparing the law and order situation in Manipur with the Congress-ruled state.

Baghel was reacting to the Prime Minister’s statement on the barbaric incident of women being paraded naked in Manipur. The Prime Minister urged all the Chief Ministers to take strict action to improve the law and order situation in their respective states, especially to strengthen the security of women. He mentioned states like Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh while referring to the safety of women.

When asked about the Prime Minister’s statement, Baghel told reporters, “Manipur has been burning for the last three months but the Prime Minister has not spoken about it even once. For the first time, he talked about the incident for 36 seconds. Instead of speaking about Manipur, he dragged Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. He should have spoken about the incident in Manipur that had shocked the entire nation.”

The Chhattisgarh Chief Minister added that the Prime Minister recently visited Chhattisgarh and in his political speech he did not say anything about the law and order situation in the state. Even Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who has visited Chhattisgarh several times, never mentioned the law and order situation in the state in his speeches. “Suddenly, today he (PM) compared Manipur with Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, where assembly elections are due (later this year),” Baghel said.

He contested and said there was no such situation (like Manipur) in Chhattisgarh. Baghel said the Prime Minister did not say a word on the killings in the court and hospital in Uttar Pradesh or the ill-treatment of tribals in Madhya Pradesh.

“He is busy with foreign tours and election campaigns. He didn’t have time to go to Manipur,” Baghel said, adding that the Prime Minister compared Manipur with states that are peaceful with the intention to divert the attention from burning Manipur. “What is happening in Manipur is a different matter. It cannot be compared with Chhattisgarh. An attempt is being made to defame Chhattisgarh, which is unfortunate,” he added.
