In a stunning incident of day-light robbery, over half a dozen persons struck at the Axis Bank in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh and decamped with cash of over Rs 7 crore.
The suspected robbers entered the Dhimrapur branch of the Axis Bank in Raigarh soon after it reopened. They posed themselves as customers.
According to police officials, the accused took out the arms, displayed and overpowered the bank employees. They also took control over a few customers present in the branch. Since the bank had just opened, there were limited customers.
Sources said the robbers locked the customers and employees in a room. They asked for the keys to the strong room. When the manager resisted, one of the robbers stabbed him and snatched away the keys.
They struck at the room and decamped with the cash available. Though officials had not confirmed, sources said over Rs 7 crore was available in the strong room that the robbers took away.
Soon after getting information, a police team led by Senior Superintendent of Police Sadanand Kumar rushed to the spot and started the investigation. The investigating officials are exploring the CCTV footage to collect the clues. The exit points have been barricades and massive checking of vehicles has been launched.
The incident had shocked the entire state as it was learnt to be the biggest bank robbery in Chhattisgarh. On September 14, 2004, Bank of Indore in the heart of the capital Raipur was robbed in broad daylight. The robbers struck when the branch opened in the morning and decamped with Rs 5 crore cash. The incident took place just 500 meter from the Moudhapara police station.
