Three people, including a woman and a girl child were killed and three others injured when an official vehicle of the district magistrate of Madhepura, Vijay Prakash Meena mowed them down on national highway 57 Tuesday morning.
According to Lallan Chaudhury, officer-in-charge of Phulparas police station in Madhubani district, accident took place at 8.30 am today when DM’s official vehicle skidded and fell on the railing of divider of NH at Purwari village. Three labourers who were engaged in painting work on the divider were run over and died on the spot.
District Magistrate, according to the eye witnesses, fled from the scene on a motor cycle. His body guard, driver and a girl who were also in the vehicle too left.
Agitated over the incident and failure of the police to arrest the driver, local villagers assembled on NH 57 which links Bihar to West Bengal and Nepal sat on dharna, prevented movement of vehicles. District Magistrate and SP of Madhubani also reached to pacify the mob and persuaded them to lift the road blockade. Accident took place under jurisdiction of Madhubani.
A press release issued by the district PRO of Madhepura claimed, there was a technical problem in the vehicle and it was due for repair. However, transport officials claimed, the DM vehicle was running without insurance for the last four years. Police have registered an FIR against the unknown driver.
Meena, an IAS officer of 2016 batch was posted as DM of Madhepura in April this year.
