New Delhi, December 7

Keeping a close vigil on the Indo-China borders following standoff in Leh sector, Indian Air Force (IAF) had a new role to play—combating Covid-19.

With the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi announcing that the Covid-19 vaccine would be ready in next few weeks, the IAF had started preparation to participate in the operation.

The IAF would deploy more than 100 aircrafts and helicopters for efficient delivery of the Covid-19 vaccine, according to reports.

Sources said that C-136J Super Hercules, IL-76 and Cargo aircraft C-17 Globemaster would be stationed to carry the vaccines.

Moreover, the Cheetah, Chinook, ALH and Chetak helicopters would also be pressed in this operation. The Dornier and Workhorse AN-32 helicopters would be deployed for service in smaller centres. On the other hand, the light and medium-lift helicopters would be safeguarded as a third link.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the first shot of the Covid-19 vaccine would be available in next few weeks during an all-party meeting a couple of days ago.
