Five workers were reportedly killed as a portion of an iron ore mine collapsed in Chhattisgarh Dantewada district Tuesday afternoon.

Over a dozen workers are reportedly trapped inside the debris of the mine. A massive search and rescue operation has been launched on the site. Besides local administration, a team of state disaster response force (SDRF) has reached the spot.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Dantewada, R K Burman said the work of constructing a retaining wall of a screening plant was going on in Kirandul. The mine collapsed and huge boulders came crashing down, trapping over a dozen labourers working in the site.

The workers belonged to the Larsen and Toubro (L&T) company that was constructing the plant. The company officials could not be contacted for a version on the issue.

Barman said the investigation into the incident would underline if any lapse was committed on the part of the company. As huge boulders had collapsed, the rescue operation would take some time, he added.

As of now, five bodies have been extricated from the site.
