A state of art Distributed Control System managed by Instrumentation Department was inaugurated at Oxygen Plant of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).
S R Suryawanshi, ED (Works) was the chief guest at the event that was organised on Thursday. Present on the occasion were B S Kartha, CGM In-charge (Electrical & Power), P S Kannan, CGM(EMD & Utility), T P Sivasankar, CGM (SMS-II), S C Patra, GM In-charge (I&A), R K Shah, GM In-charge (Oxygen Plant)), Ms. Asha Kartha, GM In-charge (Safety), Ms. Chaitali Das, GM In-charge (Instrumentation) and several other senior executives of RSP.
S C Patra demonstrated the total system including the necessity of DCS Upgradation and additional features available with the new system.
It is noteworthy that, the old DCS Systems were commissioned in different units of Oxygen Plant at different point of time supplied along with main plant equipment. The systems were responsible for complete automation system of the respective units which includes monitoring and control of process parameters, interlock & protection. The systems were in continuous operation since the inception of the units. Due to old and obsolescence it was a technical necessity to replace the existing system.
The upgraded system has the latest state of the art technologies with all the latest advance features of the DCS. Previously, it was not possible for operation to access data of ASU -3 in ASU -1 & 2 and vice-versa. Now with the integration of all the DCSs, any unit can be operated and monitored from any work station from both the control rooms.
With this replacement, Oxygen Plant is presently equipped with a single integrated system where any unit can be operated from any of the two control room, with in-built cyber security both for internal and external threat, unlimited data transmission to plant network, managing with less spare inventory and of course with a reliable auto control, Interlock and protection system for safe operation. Trouble shooting and sequence of event analysis in case of any eventualities have been made very easy.
