A jawan on duty at the state police headquarters in Chhattisgarh’s capital city opened fire on Tuesday morning.
No casualty was however reported as most of the staff and officers were yet to report to the office. The incident took place at around 9.30 am today, officials said.
The police headquarters of Chhattisgarh is located in Nava Raipur and considered to be a high security zone following Maoist insurgency in some parts of the state. On Tuesday morning, four jawans from the 14th battalion of Chhattisgarh State Armed Force (SAF) were deployed in the police headquarters.
Rakesh Yadav, one of the constables, opened indiscriminate fire. The officials said the jawan was equipped with an INSAS rifle and fired around 12 rounds. The mode of rifle indicated that he had fired knowingly though the jawan had been reportedly asserting that it was an accidental fire.
The jawan did not escape from the spot after the incident. The police took him into custody and were interrogating him.
Confirming the incident, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Raipur, Santosh Kumar Singh said the police were examining the statement of the jawan and interrogating on all possible angles related to the incident.
The incident created panic in the state capital for a while even as senior officials rushed to the spot soon after getting the information.
