Team News Riveting

Bhilai, August 19

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) of weld joints was inaugurated at Universal Rail Mill, Bhilai Steel Plant in the presence of Director In Charge, BSP, Anirban Dasgupta on 16th Aug’2024.

The long pending requirement of Indian Railways to start PAUT on weld joints has been fulfilled with the commissioning of this test in Bhilai Steel Plant. This testing facility is also being started simultaneously at RSM.

This modern technique of phased array ultrasonic test is used to detect and image the defects, if any, in the weld joints. This state-of-the-art technology uses multiple ultrasonic elements during the scan and electronic time delays to create beams by constructive interference. Beams are emitted sequentially at multiple angles allowing PAUT to create a more detailed scan to ensure healthiness of the weld joints.

The testing is being executed by RDSO approved vendor M/s. Oberoi Thermit. This method of testing weld joints will enhance the confidence levels in the quality of flash butt weld joints and will go a long way in enhancing safety in the rail network of Indian Railways which is the backbone of the nation.

On this occasion, CGM (URM), Anish Sengupta welcomed the guests and explained the functionality and salient features of the PAUT machine to the gathering.
