Ratan Tata, the former Tata Group chairman, passed away on Wednesday night at a Mumbai hospital.
The 86-year-old giant has put a staid and sprawling Indian conglomerate on the global stage with a string of high-profile acquisitions. Ratan Tata breathed his last after remaining in intensive care at Mumbai’s hospital.
He was born in Mumbai (then Bombay) to Naval and Sooni Tata. Naval Tata had been adopted by Ratanji Tata, the son of Jamsetji Tata, founder of the Tata Group
“It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation,” reads a press statement by Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran
Ratan Tata joined the Tata Group in 1962 after working for multiple companies, receiving his B.Arch. Degree from Cornell and briefly working with Jones and Emmons in Los Angeles. The former chairman of Tata Sons, the parent company of the Tata Group of companies, has played a crucial role in making Tata the country’s most ubiquitous brand.
In December 2012, Ratan Tata stepped down as the Chairman of Tata Sons after 50 years with the Tata Group and was appointed the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consoled the passing away of Titan of Indian corporate. “Shri Ratan Tata Ji was a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul and an extraordinary human being. He provided stable leadership to one of India’s oldest and most prestigious business houses. At the same time, his contribution went far beyond the boardroom. He endeared himself to several people thanks to his humility, kindness and an unwavering commitment to making our society better,” Modi said in an X post.
