SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant’s largest Blast Furnace – Blast Furnace 8 (BF-8), christened Mahamaya has become the fastest in SAIL to have crossed the 16 million tonnes (MT) milestone in cumulative production of hot metal.
BF-8 which crossed the 16 MT production milestone on 20th October 2024 has also become the fastest among furnaces of similar capacity in SAIL to have completed the 15 to 16 MT journey. BF-8 had crossed the 15 MT milestone of cumulative production on 9th June 2024. BF-8’s journey from 15 MT to 16 MT has been completed in 133 days as compared to 151 days taken by Rourkela Steel Plant’s blast furnace of similar capacity and 153 days taken by IISCO Steel Plant’s blast furnace of similar capacity to complete the 15 to 16 MT journey.
BF-8 is Bhilai’s modern blast furnace with advanced automation and control systems. The total cumulative number of days for BF-8 to reach 16 MT since its blowing in on 2nd Feb 2018 is 2452 days, as compared to 2544 days that Rourkela Steel Plant’s blast furnace of similar capacity took to cross 16 MT since its commissioning and 2856 days that IISCO Steel Plant’s blast furnace of similar capacity took to cross the 16 MT milestone since commissioning.
Director In-charge, Bhilai Steel Plant, Anirban Dasgupta, ED (Works) Anjani Kumar and senior officers of the Plant congratulated the leadership and all members of Blast Furnace Team and all supporting shops for the achievement. CGM In-charge (Iron) Tapas Dasgupta congratulated all members of BF-8 team for becoming the fastest in SAIL to cross the 16 MT milestone.
Dasgupta thanked all supporting departments including Ore Handling Plants, Sintering Plants, Coke Ovens and Coal Chemicals Dept, Steel Melting Shops, Raw Material Dept, Transport and Diesel Dept for their support. An informal cake-cutting ceremony was held in BF-8 control room today in presence of CGM In-charge (Iron), senior officers and members of BF-8 Team to celebrate the achievement.
