A notorious criminal was killed in an encounter with police in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district on Friday.
Amit Josh, against whom over 40 criminal cases were pending, was a resident of Sector-6 of Bhilai township in Durg district—about 40 km from the Chhattisgarh capital. He was an under surveillance criminal wanted in several cases registered in different police stations of Durg-Bhilai for assault and serious crimes.
About four months ago, he shot at three people near Globe Square in the heart of Bhilai township. Two persons were seriously injured in the incident. Since then, Josh was absconding even as police had launched a manhunt to nab the accused.
The Durg police on Friday received a tip off that he had returned to Bhilai and was spotted behind Jayanti Stadium. A police party comprising personnel from district force and crime squad raided the spot.
Soon after seeing the police party, Josh opened fire. The alert cops immediately took the position and retaliated. In the encounter, Amit Josh was killed.
The police crackdown on hardcore criminals came amidst Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai concern over the law and order situation in the state. He had directed the police to take stringent action against the criminals.
