Tapas Dasgupta, Chief General Manager In-charge (Iron) in SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant has been honoured with the prestigious IIM-TSL New Millennium Award 2024 in recognition of his original contribution in the area of Blast Furnace-based iron making by the Indian Institute of Metals at the 78th Annual Technical Meeting of IIM being held in Bengaluru from 20th to 22nd Nov 24.
The award was handed over to Dasgupta by Sajjan Jindal, President, IIM, B S Murty, Vice-President, IIM, Dr Komal Kapoor, Vice-President, IIM and Somnath Guha, Treasurer, IIM at Bengaluru on 20th November 2024.
IIM is organising International Symposium on Transformational Technologies in Materials and Manufacturing as part of the 78th Annual Technical Meeting. Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah also graced the award giving ceremony.
Tapas Dasgupta has worked in SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant’s Blast Furnaces for several decades during which he has contributed richly in the crucial area of iron making operations. He rose through the ranks to head the Iron Zone of Bhilai Steel Plant as CGM In-charge (Iron) and is also credited with implementation of several technological advancements in blast furnace operations and also several innovations taken under his leadership, including the use of slag to make concrete paver blocks.
Utilisation of LD slag, an elementary wastes in the integrated steel making process, through conversion into highly useful eco-friendly interlocking concrete paving blocks has been a significant step taken at Bhilai Steel Plant to meet the global need for conservation of non-renewable resources, and beneficial utilization of the crushed waste furnace steel slag as a replacement for natural sand in concrete interlocking paving block units produced for pedestrian and non-traffic application
