The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a decisive lead in the Raipur City South assembly constituency, the lone segment that went to the mid-term poll in Chhattisgarh.

The by-poll was necessitated in the constituency after Brijmohan Agrawal was elected to the Lok Sabha in the 2024 general elections. In the assembly polls, Agrawal has defeated his nearest Congress rival Mahant Ramsundar Das by a record margin of 67,719 votes. He polled 109,263 votes.

The BJP fielded his close confidant and former Raipur Member of Parliament Sunil Soni as its official candidates. Congress pitted fresher Akash Sharma in the fray. However, the Congress candidate gave a tough fight in the campaign; alerting the ruling party to plunge into serious mode.

The counting of votes took place on Saturday. According to the latest figures after 16 rounds of counting, the BJP candidate was ahead by a margin of 38777 votes. In all, 19 rounds of counting will take place for the Raipur City South constituency.

The BJP candidate has bagged 74782 votes while Congress candidate has polled 36005 votes paving way for Soni to represent the Raipur City South assembly constituency in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly.
