Women of self-help group parks food van in BALCO plant

Balco Nagar, January 20

Under the ambitious Project Unnati of the Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) Limited, women of self-help groups (SHGs) have installed a food van inside the plant premises to serve homely foods to the employees.

Chief Executive Officer and Director Rajesh Kumar inaugurated the food van in the presence of other senior officials. Snacks, Maggi sandwiches, potato fries, rolls, biryani, shakes and cold coffee etc. are in the menu available on the van. The outlet will be open from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.

Employees will also get to experience the taste of home. The food van is being operated by four women of SHG together. Currently, under Unnati project, Chhatisa Micro Enterprise is providing tiffin services along with traditional snacks of Chhattisgarh, handmade chocolates, outdoor catering service, cookies, pickles, papad, badi, papchi, khaja, thethri and cake.

Through the project, women have been provided training to make various delicious dishes that helped them to earn a livelihood and stand on their own feet. Project Unnati focuses on empowering and mobilizing women to form self-help groups and enhance their competencies and skills for entrepreneurship and building sustainable livelihoods.

More than 500 SHGs, comprising over 5,800 women, are benefiting from the various training modules of the project. The project has engaged women in a range of activities that help them gain livelihoods and stand on their own feet. The project is currently being implemented in collaboration with GPR Strategies and Solutions, a non-governmental organization dedicated to community and social services.
