Maoist Central Committee member among 14 killed in Chhattisgarh encounter

The Central Committee member of outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist), Jairam alias Chalpati was gunned down by security personnel along with 13 other rebels in an encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Gariaband district on Tuesday.

The Central Committee is the second important body in the banned organisation’s set up that takes command from the supreme authority Politburo and passes information to members. Jairam alias Chalpati was carrying a reward of Rs 1 crore on his head.

According to reports, head of Maoist organisation in Odisha Manoj and Special Zonal Committee (SZC) member Guddu were also killed in the gunbattle with the security personnel. So far, the bodies of 14 rebels have been discovered by the security personnel during the search operation after the encounter, a statement issued by the Odisha police said.

Based on a specific intelligence input, security forces of Chhattisgarh and Odisha launched a joint operation in the Kulhadighat area under the limits of Gariaband district on Monday night. Besides Operation Group E30 of Odisha police, jawans from the 207th battalion of CRPF’s jungle warfare specialised CoBRA, CRPF’s 65 and 211 Battalion and SOG Nuapada were part of the team.

The rebels opened fire after spotting the security personnel who took the position and retaliated that resulted in gunbattle. The intermittent firing between security forces and Maoists continued. The rebels later fled the spot.

During the search operation, a huge quantity of weapons including automatic weapons like SLR Rifle were recovered from the spot. The search operation and the identification of the bodies were going on.
