SAIL-Rourkela holds ground-breaking ceremony for coke oven battery #7 project

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), a unit of the Maharatna steel conglomerate SAIL, achieved another significant milestone under its Modernization and Expansion (MODEX) initiative with the ground-breaking ceremony for the Coke Oven Battery #7 project.

The event, held on Wednesday, included a Bhumi Puja to commemorate the commencement of soil testing and the ground breaking of the first pile, marking the start of this prestigious project. The ceremony was attended by senior dignitaries, including Sudip Pal Chowdhury, Executive Director (Projects), Aneesh Jamaiyar, Chief General Manager (Projects) and K K Pathak, Deputy Commandant (CISF), along with other senior officers of RSP. Representing the project consortium, S Gokulan, Project Manager from L&T Ltd., and the entire site team was also present.

Addressing the gathering, Sudip Pal Chowdhury commended the project team, led by K K Patra, GM (Projects), for their commendable efforts in ensuring that the site was ready for piling activities within the scheduled timeline. He praised the team’s dedication and emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols and maintaining the highest quality standards during the execution of the project.

It is worth mentioning here that RSP has awarded the 0.77 MTPA Stamp Charged Coke Oven Battery #7 project to a consortium of M/s L&T Ltd., India, and M/s Thyssenkrupp Uhde, Germany, on an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) basis. This project, the first-of-its-kind in SAIL, incorporates state-of-the-art stamp charging technology from Thyssenkrupp, Germany.

The Coke Oven Battery #7 project is a crucial step toward enhancing RSP’s production capacity while adopting cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices.
