Arun Dev Gautam becomes acting DGP of Chhattisgarh

Arun Dev Gautam, a 1992-batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the acting Director General of Police (DGP) for Chhattisgarh.

The state government issued the notification to this effect on Tuesday afternoon. Gautam succeeds Ashok Juneja, who retired today. The tenure of Juneja had ended in July 2024, but just before his retirement, the central government gave him an extension for six months.

Gautam has been given the responsibility of acting DGP as the Centre has not yet approved the name of new police chief for the state. Gautam is one of the candidates in the list sent by the Chhattisgarh government for the approval.

He will hold the current portfolios in addition to his new role until further notice, the order said. He has been holding the charge of Director General of Home Guards and Civil Defence.

Arun Dev, who belongs to a farmer family, is a resident of Abhaypur village in Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh. He was born on July 2, 1967. He has five brothers and one sister. He did his schooling till eighth standard from the government school of his village. Then he came to Prayagraj to stay with his elder brother for further studies. After completing tenth and twelfth from Government Inter College Allahabad, he did BA in Arts from Allahabad University and then MA in Political Science.

While doing post-graduation in Allahabad, many of his friends cleared UPSC. Motivated by their efforts, Gautam started preparation for the prestigious competitive exam. After failing in the UPSC exam in the first attempt, Arun Dev Gautam put everything into studies to achieve his goal. And in the second time, he got selected for IPS in 1992.

He joined IPS service on October 12, 1992. He was first allotted Madhya Pradesh cadre. As a trainee IPS, he was posted in Jabalpur. Then he became CSP of Bilaspur. After Bilaspur, he became SDOP Kawardha and then Additional SP Bhopal. He was also the Commandant of 23rd Battalion of Madhya Pradesh Police. His first district as SP was Rajgarh.
