The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) rescued all 12 people who were trapped in the tunnel near the Tapovan hydro power project site following a glacier burst in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.
A heavy casualty is feared in the flash flood caused due to glacier burst. People were also trapped in the tunnel following the disaster.
The ITBP was launched to carry out the rescue operation at the tunnel near Tapovan dam and evacuate the people trapped. The jawans successfully conducted the operations and evacuated 12 people who were trapped inside the tunnel.
The para-military force shared a video in its official tweet stating “Himveers (the ITBP jawans)” chanting (the war cry Badri Vishal Lal Ki Jai) after rescuing 12 men safely from a tunel near Tapovan, Joshimath after a devastating flood hit the area.
At least nine bodies have been recovered from the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) site in the Tapovan area, officials said. It is suspected that around 100 workers were at the site out of which, 9-10 bodies have been recovered from the river,” they added.
Meanwhile, seven Navy diving teams are on standby for the flash flood relief operations in the state, said the Navy officials.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs is monitoring the situation after the water level in the Dhauli Ganga River increased following an avalanche near a power project at Raini village in the Tapovan area.
