Hoshangabad is now Narmadapuram

Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan has proposed to change the name of Hoshangabad city to ‘Narmadapuram’.

Office of the CM tweeted, “On the auspicious occasion of Narmada Jayanti, CM Shivraj Chouhan has announced that from now, Hoshangabad will be known as ‘Narmadapuram’.”

A proposal from the state will be sent to the Centre for the name change.

Earlier, BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya and Protem Speaker Rameshwar Sharma had also demanded the name change of Hoshangabad to ‘Narmadapuram.’

Hoshangabad is 76.7km from the state capital Bhopal. The city is named after Hoshang Shah. the first ruler of Malwa. Hoshangabad district was part of the Nerbudda (Narmada) Division of the Central Provinces and Berar, which became the state of Madhya Bharat (later Madhya Pradesh) after India’s independence in 1947.

The city is famous for its beautiful ghats along the banks of the Narmada river, Sethani ghat is a major attraction. There are colourful celebrations in the city of Narmada Jayanti. A Satsang Bhavan on the ghat has regular visits by Hindu saints who hold regular religious discourses on Ramcharitmanas and Gegeta.
