Raipur, March 14

Director In-charge of SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant Anirban Dasgupta addressed a cross section of executives of Bhilai Steel Plant through a large group interaction (LGI) on digital platform on Saturday.

While the objective of the LGI was to communicate the targets for the financial year 2021-22, several issues regarding priorities for action, thrust areas and points of concern were discussed.  Executive Directors also addressed the cross-section of executives.

At the outset, Dasgupta spelt out plans to address the issue of ensuring raw material security as an area of foremost concern for the Plant that is currently facing a crisis of lump iron ore availability because of the delay in Rowghat project.

As regards fulfillment of the production targets for Bhilai in next fiscal year, Dasgupta stated that the annual business plan drafted for 2021-22 lays equal emphasis on achieving targets for maintenance of equipment in the first half of next fiscal year.

“While we must ensure that not a single day’s production is lost in the new fiscal year, we must at the same time strictly adhere to maintenance and shutdowns schedules in all identified areas,” he emphasized, adding that they must always keep in mind that production is a by-product of equipment availability and reliability.

Stating that the steel market saw a surge after Q2, Dasgupta said Bhilai Steel Plant had continued to grow since the lockdown period.  “I thank the Bhilai collective including those working in our Mines for their role and contribution. While we saw records being made in hot metal production and in several other areas in this financial year, our Steel Melting Shops consumed all the hot metal efficiently. Modex units have fared well,” he said.

Ensuring proper and timely maintenance, availability of spares as well as regular inspection to prevent structural and pipeline failures is all the more important for our older units, as it can affect entire plant operations, Dasgupta said they must make their old facilities safe and healthy for all personnel working inside the Plant.

Appealing to all employees to give topmost importance to safety, Dasgupta said it was their responsibility to ensure that there were no unsafe working conditions for employees and contractual workers. They must practice safe behaviour and ensure road safety. Dasgupta also appealed to one and all to guard against COVID 19 and continue to take precautions in the wake of the recent rise in cases.

Director In-charge Dasgupta also emphasized on using Data Analytics and modern industry practices such as Industry 4.0. Adoption of these modern tools is going to be the differentiator for good and not so good organizations, he said. He urged different shops to identify and list out some projects that could be taken up where they could gainfully put to use the modern tools and also identify parties that have expertise in these areas.
