SAIL-Bhilai breather for liquid medical oxygen

Supply of Liquid Medical Oxygen from Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), an arm of state-run Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), is proving to be a lifeline for Corona patients not just in Bhilai and Chhattisgarh but in eight other states across the country.

Both the Oxygen Plant 2 operated by Bhilai Steel Plant and Oxygen Plant 3 operated by M/s Praxair on BOO (build, own and operate) basis have been critical in saving lives not just of COVID patients but also patients suffering from other critical patients who are put on ventilators and other lifesaving medical equipment in intensive care units.

Liquid Medical Oxygen supplied in cylinders from Bhilai Steel Plant’s Oxygen Plant 2 has saved the lives of thousands of patients suffering from COVID or other critical ailments in the Plant’s JLN Hospital & RC. As many as 3383 oxygen cylinders have been supplied by Oxygen Plant 2 in the period from August 2020 to March 2021. These include 2115 oxygen cylinders of 6 normal cubic metre volume, 549 oxygen cylinders of 2.6 normal cubic metre volume and 719 oxygen cylinders of 1.3 normal cubic metre volume. Bhilai Steel Plant has also met emergency requirements of medical oxygen cylinders by district administration for other hospitals.

Other than supplying cylinders, the Plant’s Oxygen Plant 2 has also supplied about 56 metric tonne Liquid Medical Oxygen through tankers to other states.

On the other hand, Oxygen Plant 3 operated by M/s Praxair on BOO (build, own and operate) basis in Bhilai Steel Plant premises has during the period from August 2020 to March 2021 supplied 12,947 metric tonne of Liquid Medical Oxygen through tankers to other states including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Karnataka and within the state of Chhattisgarh, where numerous lives have been saved in many hospitals located in different cities. The state wise volumes of Liquid Medical Oxygen are – 5921 metric tonne to Telangana, 2640 metric tonne to Madhya Pradesh, 1955 metric tonne in Chhattisgarh, 999 metric tonne to Maharashtra, 665 metric tonne to Andhra Pradesh, 389 metric tonne to Uttar Pradesh, 190 metric tonne to Odisha, 154 metric tonne to Gujarat, and 89 metric tonne to Karnataka.
