Octogenarian former Jansangh karyakarta Samendra Prosad Biswas today had an unexpected visitor to dine with, it was the country’s home minister Amit Shah.
Ahead of the fourth phase of the West Bengal assembly elections, Shah on Friday had lunch at the Kolkata residence of Biswas, who is also the founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The 89-year-old Biswas became a member of the BJP on April 6, 1980 and has since played a crucial role in strengthening the organisation. He was equally active in the Jansangh.
“BJP has deep roots in Bengal. Today, I had the privilege of having lunch at Shri Samarendra Prasad Biswas ji’s home in Bhabanipur. Jupi Da is one of the founding members of the BJP. His efforts and commitment to bring a BJP govt, to serve the people of WB, will soon be realised,” Shah said in a tweet.
Party leaders Swapan Dasgupta and Dinesh Trivedi accompanied him. The message was loud and clear; BJP recognises those who had built the party.
The veteran leader’s daughter, Chaiti, told a news agency that Bengali cuisine was on the menu. “There was luchi, roti, chholar dal, begun bhaja, kumro (pumpkin) bhaja, patal sabzi, chanar (cheese) dalna, dhokar dalna, bhindi sabzi, mango chatni, papad and five types of special sweets of Kolkata in the lunch,” she added.
